A panel that feels native — the OS's own skin, a thumb-sized account button, and press feedback

On a first visit the panel now wears the skin of the device it is opened on — iOS on an iPhone, Material on Android, macOS and Windows on their desktops — and the mobile top bar keeps every control in the safe area with a 44px touch target.

What changed

The panel used to open in one face for everybody until a skin was picked by hand. Now, when you have never chosen a skin yourself, it wears the face of the device it is opened on:

  • iPhone and iPad: the iOS theme
  • Android phones and tablets: the Material (Android) theme
  • Mac: the macOS theme, with its menu bar and dock
  • Windows: the Windows theme, with its taskbar and Start menu
  • Anything else (a Linux desktop, a browser that names no platform): the Mizito theme, as before

Your own choice always wins: the first time you pick a skin from the Panel skin menu, that choice is stored and beats the device's guess from then on. Clearing the choice brings the panel back to the face of the device you are on.

The mobile top bar is kinder to thumbs too. The account button is now a real 44px touch target, sits a whole mis-tap away from the Menu button, and — like the rest of the header row — never slides under the notch in landscape: the row respects the safe area the OS reports. The Desk panel's hamburger button, which used to be pulled 8px toward the screen edge, got the same treatment.

And the header's buttons now answer your finger the way a native app does: whatever you press — search, menu, your account — gives a touch of scale (0.96) and springs back. Readers who have asked the system for reduced motion get none of it.

How to use it

  1. Nothing to do — the device's skin applies from the very first visit, before the first paint.
  2. To choose your own face instead, open the account popover (top bar on a phone) and pick from the Panel skin menu. Your pick applies at once and everywhere.
  3. To feel the rest, tap Search, Menu or your account on a phone: the buttons are larger, spaced apart, and respond to the press.

Good to know

  • The device-based skin is a guess that is never stored: it is re-read on every visit, and any skin you pick yourself overwrites it for good.
  • The skin you chose before this update is unaffected — a stored choice has always outranked the default.
  • On a phone the Windows and macOS skins stay the panel you know (their window shells only turn on at desktop widths); the iOS and Material skins restyle the whole panel, dock included.
